Silk crêpe gown

Italian workshop

Date
1807-12 c.
Inventory
TA 1873
Inscriptions
Donated by Count Venanzo Mayo, 1985

This ivory silk crêpe gown is embroidered with silver foil leaves and lozenges. The oval neckline is adorned with lace. Reflecting the Empire line typical of the early years of the century, it has puffed sleeves and a high waistline below the bust, gathered at the back, and ends in a sophisticated shaped hem at the feet. During restoration, in order to prevent it from deteriorating further, it was taken apart (while preserving the original seams), the fabric was consolidated and certain missing parts were reconstructed.

The gown is likely to have belonged to Massimilla Celano, the wife of Prailo Mayo, third-born son of the Governor of the Principality of Francavilla in the Abruzzi.
