Of Asian origin, it is a small palm species (up to 3-4 m. in height) that is also widespread in Europe; it has slender, erect, dark-coloured stems that bear a rough layer consisting of the remnants of withered fronds; the fronds are borne by slender elongated petioles, are fan-shaped, and consist of shiny dark green ribbon-like papyraceous segments. These palms produce many suckers at the base, giving rise to clumps, which become rounded in nature. These plants require minimum temperatures not inferior to 10-12°C and locations with partial shade or full shade.
