Baccio Bandinelli painter
Gli Uffizi e i Musei Vaticani presentano la 'Pietà'
The Uffizi and the Vatican Museums together present a hitherto unpublished work by a great artist - Florentine by birth, but Roman and 'Vatican' by adoption - Baccio Bandinelli, renowned sculptor in the service of Cosimo I de' Medici. The painting - a 'Pietà with the Virgin, an Angel and Nicodemus' - is a rare example of Bandinelli's activity as a painter, and it will be on display until February 25 on the second floor of the Gallery, not far from the copy of the Laocoon made by Baccio between 1520 and 1525 at the request of Pope Leo X. The Pietà, thought to be lost, was recently found in the Vatican Museums' storerooms and underwent a complex restoration. The Departments of Prints and Drawings preserves a preparatory drawing for the painting, superb example of Bandinelli's talent for graphics.
