Abito charleston

Italian or french atelier

Date
1925-27 ca.
Inventory
TA 3834

The dress, with its slinky line and godet flare, its low-cut, round- ed neckline and its yellow gold silk tulle shoulder straps, is fully embroidered with small pearl beads, sequins and matching glass and spun gold bugle beads. The lower part of the dress has re- cently been consolidated by replacing the restraining tulle. The dress belonged to Princess Emilia Altieri, one of the most elegant women of her day, and perfectly captures the taste of the period with its simple, soft lines embellished with embroidered decorations recalling the Futurist artist Giacomo Balla’s (1871-1958) ex- periments in abstraction.

Donated by Umberto Tirelli, 1986

Ph. Leonardo Salvini
