Opera coat

Reville & Rossiter

Date
1920-25 c.
Inventory
13148

This voluminous, flared bottle green silk velvet opera coat is cut at hip height and has a high padded collar decorated with seven plant volutes in the same embossed fabric, forming an ornamental motif of Renaissance inspiration. The broad batwing sleeves show a similar form of decoration. Reville & Rossiter Couture, one of the most important English fashion houses of its day, was founded in London in the early 20th century by the designer William Wallace Terry, who adopted the professional pseudonym Reville, and by Sarah Rossiter, who was in charge of the administrative and commercial side of the business.

Donated by Cecilia Matteucci Lavarini, 2012.
