Can a Roman altar conceal a hidden message? The dedication to Junia Procula is the answer! The stunning funerary monument erected by the parents of little Procula, prematurely dead and masterfully portrayed on the front of the altar, hides terrible accusations on its back.
A few years after his daughter's death, in fact, her father explicitly accused her mother Junia Acte, formerly a slave of his, whom he had freed in order to marry her. A peculiar form of curse, called "defixio" in Latin, we can now know thanks to this fascinating monument.
